2017 has undoubtedly been the year of Flamenco in Velez. Spearheaded by Flamenco Abierto Axarquia, the last few months have gone by in a blur of one astonishing performance after another. Rafael Ramirez’s Toques en Mi Conciencia is simply another stage in an ongoing cycle of seriously high-class guitar, song and dance.
What is it? This latest Flamenco Abierto event promises to be an altogether grander, more avant-garde and theatrical affair than the recent rootsy Friday night concerts. Taking inspiration from the concept of conscience, it promises to be creatively choreographed and both expertly and passionately performed.
Where is it? Teatro del Carmen (Plaza del Carmen, Velez-Malaga).
When is it? This weekend – Saturday 10th June; doors open at 21.00.
Why should you go? Rafael Ramirez was the first dancer to step out on to the boards of Velez’s Peña Flamenca for Flamenco Abierto back in February, and his performance was… absolutely electrifying. Just back from performing in Hamburg, Flamenco Abierto founder and mainstay Ruben Portillo will take up the guitar duties (having put together the musical composition), while cantaoras Cristina Tovar and Inma are two of the finest young voices around. In short, Velez-Malaga continues to be the scene of some of the very best Flamenco to be seen anywhere in Malaga right now.
How much is it? €10. (In advance – see below.)
