Things to Do in June

Summer’s here in Velez. But there’s much more going on than just sol y playa – the June cultural schedule’s absolutely packed with great things to do, from high-class Flamenco and dance events to art exhibitions and even a beer festival.

3rd June – Al’madina Ballix: El Velez Nazari

What: Theatricalised night-time walking tours through Moorish Velez.

When: Saturday 3rd June: 18.00hrs – 20.00 hrs. 

Where: The tours start from La Casa de las Titas (Calle Magdalena 2, Velez-Malaga).

How much: €6 per person.

3rd June  Cancion de Luna

What: A night of exotic oriental dance from the dance school of Danzas Orientales Helena.

When: Saturday 3rd June from 19.00hrs.

Where: Teatro del Carmen, Velez-Malaga.

How much: €6 per person.

6th June – Leopoldina Valdemoro Jurado Exhibition

What: Exhibition of portraits of famous Veleños and family members of the artist.

When: Tuesday 6th June – 6th July.

Where: El Posito (Plaza de la Constitucion, Velez-Malaga).

How much: Free admission.

6th June – Samaruco Flamenco

What: Flamenco by the sea from the ultra-talented Ruben Portillo, Mamen Ruiz and Sandra Cisneros.

When: Tuesday 6th June from 21.00hrs.

Where: Bahia de Tanit, Torre del Mar. 

How much: Admission is free for the price of a drink or a bite to eat.

8th June – Renaissance Concert

What: Renaissance-style concert from the Ad Libitum quartet.

When: Thursday June 8th from 20.15hrs.

Where: MVVEL (C/ Dr. Eduardo Jimenez Poey no 1, Velez-Malaga).

How much: Free admission.

9th June – Aires de la Maroma Concert

What: A night of mixed music and dance including the troupe of Antonio and Elsa Guerra, the municipal band, the voice of Miguel Angel Fernandez and oriental dance from Danzas Orientales Helena.

When: Friday 9th June from 21.00 hrs.

Where: The church of Las Claras convent (Calle Felix Lomas, Velez-Malaga).

How much: €5

9-11th June – Artisan Beer Festival

What: A celebration of all things ‘beer’ – with up to 35 beers from across Andalucia (including 9 from the province of Malaga) being served up in 25 stands and food trucks.

Where: Paseo Andalucia, Velez-Malaga.

When: 9-11th June (exact hours have yet to be finalised – but afternoon/evening).

How much: Admission is free (the beers, obviously, are not).

10th June – Toques en mi Conciencia from Rafael Ramirez

What: Velez’s Flamenco scene continues to go from strength to strength with the critically acclaimed dancer Rafael Ramirez joining guitarist Ruben Portillo of Flamenco Abierto and singers Cristina Tovar and Inma Rivero.

Where: Teatro del Carmen, Velez-Malaga.

When: Saturday 10th June from 21.00hrs.

How much: From €10.

23rd June – Noche de San Juan 

What: Saint John’s Night, or Midsummer’s Eve, has been an important date in the European calendar for thousands of years and is celebrated up and down the coasts of Spain. Torre del Mar are putting on music, fireworks and a huge sardine espeto cook-up.

Where: Playa de Torre del Mar.

When: Friday 23rd June from 20.00hrs to 03.00hrs.

How much: Free admission.

24th June – Fiesta de la Primavera

What: This music festival, postponed back in April because of rain, has been re-arranged. The same pop acts are scheduled with Spanish New Wave favourites Los Secretos heading the bill.

Where: The Fortress, Velez-Malaga.

When: Saturday 24th June from 20.00hrs.

How much: €15 in advance; €20 at the gate.

29th June – Concierto Musica Romantica

What: The curtain goes down on the Museo de Velez’s fantastic Thursday music cycle with this concert of Romantic period music from wind quartet, Mare Nostrum.

Where: MVVEL (C/ Dr. Eduardo Jimenez Poey no 1, Velez-Malaga).

When: Thursday 29th June from 20.15hrs.

How much: Free admission.
